Can't access Samba shares from Windows 10 client
#3
Hi Guys, I am experimenting with Linux for the first time so please excuse any stupid remarks.

I have been having the exact same problem and I think I have a fix... of sorts.

The problem lies with changes that Microsoft have made to the latest update to Windows 10. In windows, type "winver" in the run box. The latest version is 1803.

Among other changes, SMB1.0/CIFS file sharing support has been disabled by default. If you go to Control Panel\All Control Panel Items\Programs and Features\Turn Windows features on or off, scroll down to the relevant box. There are 3 options:

SMB Automatic Removal
SMB Client
SMB Server

I ticked the bottom two, saved, rebooted and problem solved. I can now see all the shares on my Win10 box from mt Linux Lite box.

Microsoft recommend that you completely remove SMB1.0/CIFS from Windows 10 to prevent the spread of ransomeware. It would have been nice if that had been more widely disseminated.

Another Gotcha! is that the whole concept of the Homegroup (as opposed to a Workgroup) has been abandoned. There is no support for Homegroups in ver 1803. Not only that but when you upgrade to 1803 (which is automatic), your homegroups will have gone.
