I too have this problem on Linux Lite 4.2 (Ubuntu 14.04 LTS based) running Kodi 16.1 and will try this fix. I discovered the same solution when I ran into the same problem on Peppermint OS 8, (Ubuntu 16.04 based ) Running both Kodi 16.1 and Kodi 17.6, and was able to successfully perform the upgrades to the Python and Openssl files and all problems were fixed.
What I was seeing was a failure for Kodi to properly update the Library for my personal media which adds the files to the index and pulls fan art from the web after adding new media. For example, if a TV show or a Movie was added to my personal library and I asked Kodi to go out and update the library to now include the new artwork and description pages and add them to Kodi, after only a few % of updating, the error pops up that the "Connection to the server has been lost, would you like to continue scanning?" Of course the connection to the server was just fine.
I started digging and discovered that as long as you installed Kodi and immediately did your library scan's after adding your personal media to Kodi, the scan would work just fine, but if you added a Kodi Addon like MrBlamo Repo or TVaddons tools Repo to Kodi, the next time you tried to update your library either manually or by setting it to do so every time Kodi starts, it will fail a few percent into doing so and never complete. Also, many Kodi "Dependency" files would fail to install when new Kodi Addons were installed. And of course, may lock ups and freezes occurred which forced you do a full shutdown and reboot to get out of Kodi. Very Frustrating!
Anyway, I'm going to attempt to fix my Linux Lite 4.2 PC running Kodi 16.1 with this fix and report back to everyone. From what I understand, this is only a problem in Linux. All other operating systems are unaffected.
The files that are being installed evidently come from Ubuntu 17.xx...
UPDATE: Well, the files that I had success with on Peppermint OS 8 did NOT work on Linux Lite 4.2 evidently because my installation of Linux Lite is the 32 bit version and the files I was trying to install only work on 64 bit versions of Ubuntu.
Hope this helps others trying to fix this problem with Kodi.
