Thanks. That worked with a few quick fixes:
1) I didn't need to download bootia32.efi separately; it's already there now, and
2) I got a new error while installing, that said " 'grub-efi-amd64-signed package' failed to install", but was able to get it to work by installing while turning the internet access off, as discussed here https://forums.linuxmint.com/viewtopic.php?t=241379
