I don't know about other ubuntu-based OSs, but the following might be of use.
I had the problem of needing to install Broadcom wifi drivers, which were offered during LL installation, but without internet connection would be impossible to download.
What worked for me was to use my phone> internet sharing> share via bluetooth. (Bluetooth was already installed and working on LL).
So, once I got on-line via bluetooth, I installed the Broadcom wifi driver, (and other updates), then I was able to use wifi.
