Like vno and OP I had the same problem on a few machines.
Changing the video output settings in VLC helped most of the time, had the most trouble on older hardware (Intel graphics).
The problem happened on anything in VLC, including DVD playback.
I think video drivers codec compatibility could be related. I had small videos, but higher resolutions videos could drop after the x seconds buffer on slower hardware.
Maybe some Ux veterans could suggest another video player?
