Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init! exit

I had win7 on the same drive before and lubuntu 17.04, had no problems with those, my monitor is crt but has 1024x768 resolution and passes all the other minimum requirements in the link. I'll try the cmos battery thing tomorrow, if that doesn't work then I'll try some other distro.
