You don't say which browser you're using but I had a somewhat similar experience a few days ago with Firefox interfering with my attempts to configure a DSL router. This behaviour turned out to be due to a new feature in a recent update known as captive portal detection. It seems this feature is supposed to make use of wifi APs with logins easier, but it might be worth finding out more about it if you use Firefox. I had to disable it to complete my router configuration...
