Go with what TC first suggested in post #3 - it's the simplest & best option - as he said no need to bother with PPA...
You'll find Stellarium in the Ubuntu repository as follows:
1. Go to Menu System Install/Remove Software
2. Synaptic Package Manager (SPM) will then ask you for your password - enter it
3. In the SPM toolbar, click on Search and enter "stellarium" in the search box
4. You will then see the packages "stellarium" and "stellarium-data" listed - right-click on "stellarium" and select mark for installation - both packages will be selected by default
5. Click Apply in the SPM toolbar to install both packages, and then you should be good to go...
