I have been booting Linux ISOs from the HDD, and sometimes installing them to the same HDD for a while now. I thought to write a tutorial on the subject but the link below seems correct to me, and has all the necessary infomation on the method. If you want to avoid USB issues, and avoid DVD burning, this is the way to go. I would only add that to install over an existing system you need to save the ISO to a separate ext2/3/4 small partition first. I use a separate partition to store several ISOs.
