I guess you could try one more startup parameter that I ran across, but doubt result will be any different.  Instead of "live-media=/dev/sdb1", use "ignore_uuid":

I think I should leave this unsolved, even though I managed to get Lite installed. If anybody searches for the phrase I have in the Subject and the thread is marked "Solved", they'd be kind of peeved to find out that I solved it by sticking an optical drive in the laptop.

Yes, on second thought you're probably right.  Leave it unsolved, or you could mark it partially solved if you want.  Just go to first post in the thread, hit the "Modify" button, then add <SOLVED -- Partially> or <SOLVED -- Sort of> to the Subject line.
