It placed an icon in the desktop bar at the bottom of the screen. if there were no updates, it would display an icon with a check mark in it. If there were updates, the icon had an exclamation point in it. And it should remain sticky and always viewable.
I don't know how often Mint checks for updates, you would have to inspect the code, it may even be more than every hour, like every 2 or 3 hours. Having a constantly viewable icon is purely psychological in that it reassures people that an application is there and 'doing things'. Our application still does things, the main difference is that it doesn't show until it needs to, ensuring you are not distracted unless it is absolutely necessary. Simple, fast and free (with minimal distraction)
