USB bootable BIOS UEFI Secure Boot
#15
Yes, I did move too fast through machines perhaps. But I remember the glory days when I installed distros on several machines and never once had an issue. Maybe I was just lucky. Also: I have a 'thing' about HP and shouldn't have picked them up in the first place, it's just that in the local stores I was going to it is about 75% HP's to everything else until I found a different big box store (Best Buy) with a larger selection. So: am now on a Lenovo Yoga 710 and either will figure it out or will buy a refurbished old Thinkpad which works great with Linux distros.

In any case, after great difficulty I managed to LL installation routine to work all the way through to being able to run it (before that, couldn't even get them to take because of Bios issues). (I also found out that on this machine you have to hit the F2 key repeatedly whilst the Lenovo flash screen is up, just hitting it once or holding it down doesn't do it. I found this out in a moment of frustration later verified by a lucky search!!)

I managed to get both LL and Manjaro to install. Even though with LL (the first successful one) I had made a 100 GB partition on my 250 GB SSD for the Linux distro, given how hard it had been just to make it to this point, I decided to wipe the disk anyway, which I did. Then it installed. There seems to be an issue with not seeing the type of screen correctly (typeface is tiny), which can be adjusted in the Display Settings, but which returns on booting up each time - I mean really tiny, like 4 or something). So after installing LL I updated and rebooted then it wouldn't reboot. Furthermore, I cannot use the installation disk to get into Live CD, and also the Advanced options don't do anything. So I installed Manjaro and same thing: ran installation, then updates, then rebooted, then it freezes, the advanced options freeze and then trying to reboot from DVD it won't even open up the disk, just keeps going from blank screen to Lenovo logo.

Now, when I run the USB instead of the external DVD, it goes further. THat is a LL distro. But it hangs early on into the loading routines and now, after more than 30 minutes, obviously nothing is going on (I prefer the DVD's because you can hear whether or not the disk is whirring!).

So now I will try to see if there is a way to read the processes as you suggest.
I will also work with some more targeted searched involving this particular model.
And if I have success will report back.

Thanks for all the help.

I think my main problem with this is uncertainty: not being a good technician (despite having used Macs, PC's and Linux OS's since the early 80's) I find it hard to related to problems like this when I really don't know what is going on. I also found it extremely difficult to find out how to get into the BIOS, something which used to be child's play. (With this new Lenovo, you have to go into the BIOS each time you want to boot, the order re-assembles itself after each attempt... weird...and confusing until you notice...)
