Wrong Screen resolution - lost use of monitor even on rebooting

tried the "sleep 5; xrandr -s 1024x768 -d :0" suggestion  terminal screen came back with "Size 1024x768 not found in available modes"

UPDATE

2007 - Fujitsu Siemens V3405 Laptop  2 GB Ram LL3.6 32bit. Now 32bit Debian 9 + nonfree.
