I started with Ubuntu 11.04 (April 2011) and when Ubuntu went to their Unity Desktop I absolutely did not like it after I gave it a try. Then I found Linux Mint with the MATE Desktop Manager. About 6 months ago I discovered Linux Lite which only comes with the Xfce Desktop Manager. Seems faster on the same computer that had Linux Mint MATE. I also think Lite is much more flexible. I am on Lite 3.2 and Lite 3.4 is due on April 1, 2017. I suppose I will upgrade after doing some research. Mine ain't broke so why upgrade is what I am thinking...
I have the advantage of having a test computer that I can try out whatever before I take the plunge and change Operating Systems. This way I don't mess up my main Lite 3.2 computer.
Try Lite and you may just like it.
