A few things:
1) For the icons on the desktop, right click and go to Desktop Settings. Choose the Icons tab, and in the Default Icons section, check/uncheck the icons you want to appear on the desktop. For your concern, you'll want to pay special attention to the "Removable Devices" section under Default Icons.
2) For the scroll bar, you can get some relief there by choosing a different Window Manager Theme. Go to Menu > Settings > Window Manager and try out the different ones. For the Daloa and Kokodi themes, the bar itself won't get thicker, but the border will, allowing for a more forgiving scroll bar experience.
For Firefox specifically, you can avoid using the scroll bar by going to your Advanced Preferences and in the Browsing section, select "Use autoscrolling" and "Use smooth scrolling." These options allow you to scroll using the middle mouse button for scrolling in lieu of the scroll bar itself.
