Of course a more sensitive approach in form of a notifier (not an installer) would be preferable.
Lite-updater seemed to be perfect (thanks bfb for sharing your experience with it on LL 3). Or have a look at the solution LinuxMint is offering. I haven't tested the update-notifier package that could be installed via the normal repository in Linux Lite....

In regard to forced updates and Windows updates:
  •     For a normal Desktop user I consider security updates a must, no matter which OS is installed.
  •     From the feedback I get Windows users are not per se against (even forced) updates. It obviously has more to do with the much bigger hassle (compared to Linux) due to necessary reboots and waiting, waiting, waiting - and broken systems at times.
