The wifi icon should be part of the "Indicator Plugin" on the panel (I believe). Maybe you accidentally deleted the Indicator Plugin.
Right-click an empty area on the panel, then choose: Panel -> Panel Preferences -> Items (tab). Scroll through list of "Items" to see if "Indicator Plugin" is one of them.
Good luck.

- If it is not there, do the following to put it back on the panel:
-
[li]While in Items tab, click the "+" to add a new item
- Find "Indicator Plugin" on the list that pops up and click to highlight it; then
- Click the "Add" button; then "Close" button
- It will now be at bottom of Items list
- If you want to change its position on the panel, use arrow buttons
- Click "Close" when done and hopefully the wireless icon is back again.
