VLC's messages feature might also help track the issue, start your troublesome file playing in VLC then click the Stop button.
Then click Tools > Messages to bring up the message window.
Change the Verbosity setting in the message window to Debug, then click Play.
There might be something in the message output that tells why it's failing, if it's going blank after only a fraction of a second just click stop again once it's gone blank & have a look at the output from the messages for clues.
