32 or 64 bit advice

With my track record I would like to fully evaluate 2.8 - 64 bit on my machine before committing to installing it on my hard disk . At the moment I am unhappy that I cannot do an " Update "or add programs using " Lite Software "

Does anyone else have a problem with Update - With me it never gets past    -  http://archive.ubuntu.com trusty/universe Translation-en_us  -    when trying  to update sources [Updateing Software sources - please wait ....  ]  dialogue then I get an Error Message --" couldn't fetch the package cache information lists "
