I have managed to boot up Linux Lite (haven't tried 2.8 yet though) on an USB stick/ a portable hard disk.
However, not via my preferred method to boot up directly from the ISO file via an entry in my bootloader config file.
It involves unpacking two directories from the ISO file. Furthermore, it's not possible to unplug the USB device.
