Sorry to say Colin, but when i read some posts of you it seems you're only busy breaking your system for unknown reasons.... Just like this example.
1) How did you purged LibreOffice (LO) and OpenOffice (OO)?
2) How did you installed OpenOffice?
3) Did you used Synaptic to remove LO and OO?
In a terminal you should have removed LO with this command:
Kep in mind there are always leftovers to find, i.e: library packages. Best is always to use Synaptic since Synaptic is a very powerfull GUI package manager.
