Font rendering was and still is a pain in the ass when using some other distro's/ Ubuntu was the first to get font rendering perfectly clear. Even Linux Mint has the perfect font rendering. I know when i tried Debian i had a lot if issues with font rendering which seems to be some shortcomming with the libcairo package(s). Ubuntu (Canonical) did a great job fixing this and by fixing it, all *buntu derivatives profit from it.
