My take / suggestions on linux lite
#27
Wow, guess I've been away longer then I let my mind say I really was. Tongue So anyway I did try the other distro's and found myself not satisfied and reinstalled LL. I believe I am hooked. I did however purge auto remove some programs I don't/won't use and am a bit happier. And yes I did change some type sizes ect. to something I can live with for the time being. I do believe once I find a nicer themed bar with color I will be more at home once I truly learn how to. Someone needs to give life to these very drab and lifeless gray icons in the system tray.

In any route I am using LL now as we speak and have allot to learn. I will know this just as well as windows or die trying from here out. I do however have some thoughts or suggestions.

Wirezfree ... I did install bleachbit and used it and it seemed to do a good job however I did notice it didn't do government rewrites like East-tec Eraser did for windows. I habitually used 7 passes and now anything less is unacceptable especially in these days. I've done no research for bleachbit so there are allot of unanswered questions for the program. Once I found out in windows that delete didn't mean unrecoverable delete I ran East-tec and was a must from there out.

Another thing I am confused about is why everyone thinks Linux is so safe out of the box or that's the impression I've gotten. I totally intend to run something along the lines of spybot for windows/antivirus, firewall and privacy software. Linux might claim to be more safe then windows but I wouldn't take it for granted, not even for 1 moment. This is the true area that Linux as a whole needs to greatly improve is it's extra programs. Spybot out of the box was a master piece and yet I do a search for an alternative for linux and all's they have are antivirus programs which linux claims it does require. :o Go figure?

I've also stumbled on allot of scripts people use to do the same operations as bleachbit. The worst part is would be trusting scripts from folks you don't know on a system I don't know. Any points in the right direction would be greatly appreciated in this area as I must find a way for my 7 passes on unused space.

Next would be where I read of a program out there something on the lines of "remaster" that allows people to remaster a changed distro so that later on down the line a reinstall time would be cut greatly. This I would like and am surprised it's not in this distro if it is a well defined and stable program.

On last note I will say one thing, LL most definitely is very stable. I yanked several programs out of it and it never even burped at me when I finished. I couldn't even count all the times windows slapped me for taking out unused programs over the great many of years.

PS... I can see now that maybe the word "bloat" was not the best word to use when describing the software I don't use. People most definitely take offense to the word in linux where they didn't as windows users.

PSS... My many thanks to you all for being so pleasant with your thoughts and suggestions. I felt as I may have offended some of you with my thoughts but I am nothing but a straight forward type of person in life. I am no good at sugar coating something I see. I still don't understand the concept of linux offering a distro with more then the stable working OS but I am also proudly old fashion ... put nothing more then you intend to eat on your plate.

Anyway take care and god bless

A new LL userĀ  ;D
