should i just abandon google chrome?

LL 2.6 (and all other 2.x series of LL) are based on the "Trusty" version of Ubuntu.  If I'm reading quote from Google engineer provided by rokytnji correctly, 32-bit Chrome for "Trusty" and newer releases will still be supported, so no need for you to worry.

P.s.  Regarding things like CCleaner and defragmenting:  as Nomko said, not as necessary in Linux as in Windows.  Lite Cleaner tool is available in the Menu for basic cleaning operations if you want it.  (Would recommend you use that instead of Bleachbit.  Bleachbit can cause problems if you are new to Linux and randomly use it to clean things you don't really understand.  Various forums are full of posts from people who broke things that way.)  Defragging the hard drive is not something you need to do at all.  Linux file system works differently than Windows and only under extremely rare circumstances would you have problems with fragmented files.
