I always boot the computer first, because I use the printer only sporadically. That's not going to change, so if I had to I would live with the problem - maybe put a launcher to the Printers on the Panel to make things easier.
That is a very interesting command. I ran it, without rebooting and after turning the printer on, and found:
It suggested that I run hp-doctor, which I am doing right now. That brought me to this:
2 errors, down from 15. I'm running hp-doctor again -- I got the same result. It says Trusty Thar is depreciated or not supported. Perhaps that is the problem. I'll watch this for a few days and see if the hp-doctor changes have made a difference.

[size=1em]Note: strange, but in editing this post the (forum?) software turned some of the last lines into font so small it looked like a line of dots on the page. I thought the text was lost but only had to resize it. It seems to be associated with invoking the <CODE> tag on existing text.
