Your looking to find available SSID's?
Just like in WinXP (the default wireless) clicking on the WiFi icon will list all available wireless networks..
If you notice in the attached mine has a little lock on it (for VPN)... I'm using 2.6 but very similar in 2.4..

This pic has the antenna style look (internal wireless-my mini) where as my other system (wireless USB) has staggered bars..
This is assuming drivers are loaded (you mention problems solved) and radio is on...
Selecting your wireless will prompt for passcode then should connect...
