5 years is not bad at all. It's just right, in fact. My desktop is 8 years old. My laptop must be about 3 years old. They both run LL 2.6 with 8GB of RAM and 300GB hard drives. With Linux Lite, I don't see a need to replace either of them for the next 5 years.
Before going much further, open up Systemback and create a restore point.
You don't have to have SSD. For around $25 USD, you can get a 320GB hard drive on Amazon. That's 5400 rpm. 7200 rpm might be about $10 more. If your laptop can hold more than the 4GB of RAM you have listed, for virtualization, it would be beneficial to max out what it can handle. On ebay, you should be able to find good deals on that.
You don't need Guest Additions yet. It's to help with resizing the window of your VM. Once you get Windows up, it'll be very easy to get that going.
