I do so appreciate the comments and advise. I think I can copy the download  "linux-lite-2.6-32bit.iso" to a dvd, but I am just hoping that, that would be what your are talking about when you said run the Live CD version to try on my laptop. And then I hope that the statement on the download page "Login to the live desktop is automatic" is true but I'm not sure. Hopefully then if I can run the new 2.6 from the dvd and things seem to work ok I will be able to install it and remove 1.0.6 at the same time by booting from the dvd or a download on a flash drive.
I know that to you these are dumb sounding statements or questions but I have never done this and could use some hand holding. I'm not worried about loosing anything other than the use of the old laptop so I won't attempt to add partitions now.
