Upgrading from 1.0.6
#3
You will not be able to upgrade from where you are to the 2.x series and then to 2.6.  I believe this is because:

    1) The 1.x series has an Ubuntu 12.04 LTS base.
    2) The 2.x series has an Ubuntu 14.04 LTS base.
    3) The 3.x series will have an Ubuntu 16.04 LTS base.

I would suggest you first run the Live CD version of 2.6 to make sure everything works as expected (printer, wifi, etc).  If so, and you want to go forward, then backup your /home folder.  This will make of copy of all your data.  Install 2.6 and copy the /home backup (from 1.06) to your new /home (LL 2.6).

If you created a separate home partition in your 1.06 install, then all you'd really have to do is install 2.6 to your root partition.  Your home partition would be left alone, though I'd still recommend backing it up first.  If you don't have a separate home partition, you'll want to create one going forward.  More on that can be seen here:

A separate home partition makes installing other distros or new LTS versions of the same distro simpler.  It's worth knowing about it now.
