@bgaulke,
I looked at the other forum, and like rokytnji said it was turning into a "free for all",
lots of well intentioned folks, but just to many inputs. I was not aware of this when I posted.
There are far more knowledgeable people than me, who may have a better/correct way to solve your issue.
If you want to follow what I posted.?
To extract the .tar , then right click the file and select the "Extract To..." option,
then navigate to where you want to extract "To"
I just did it with that file, and it extracts O.K, there is readme file inc
I had to use Open as Administrator in order to enter my sudo password, but in the end it still doesn't work.

Try and be as detailed in your answers as we are in our replies. It still does not work is not a detailed answer.
We are not in the room with you and do not see what you are doing.
So all just guess work on our end. Especially harder work with "did not work either".

Sorry about not being clearer. I am just very discouraged at this point. It's as if I hadn't done anything on this for the past week. No wireless systems are recognized and no drivers appear to have been associated with the wifi adapter. That is inxi -Fxx doesn't list a driver for the Ralink usb adapter. I am planning on giving up at this point and waiting for a visit with my son early next month, who can be in the room with me and the computer.
