A separate thread would be a great move in due course, but as I say at the moment I'm maxing out my current processors, even with the simplest FM mono receiver.
GNU Radio requires a high power CPU such as an Intel i7, in order to achieve anything meaningful, which for me won't be until next year. With that you could produce an FM radio with RDS or a DAB radio, or a multitude of other radio's between say 30Mhz to over a Ghz, using just a RTL2832U+R820T USB dongle as your hardware.
If you wanted to make a start using GNU Radio with your i7, the best first move would to get a RTL2832U+R820T USB dongle from Ebay or Amazon for less that 10 pounds. If you wanted to go lower in frequency you can get an up converter for about 30 pounds.
Sadly I won't be able to make real progress on GNU Radio until next year when I get my i7.
