I had the problem occur first in my email and as I said I found a solution in forcing messages to display in fonts I had.
My Libre Office Documents are fine so I see it isn't a system wide problem after all.
In leafpad the files display in certain fonts only.
Courier 10 pitch displays fine but not courier new. Most fonts don't render correctly in leafpad; Times new Roman, Arial etc. so I have set leafpad to use a font that does work.
If I open a file in libre office saved in Courier 10 pitch in leafpad it opens as liberation mono. Which seems odd.
Perhaps leafpad is not meant to use these other fonts? If so, which font should I set?
The email came from the head of an arts society so it could be that she uses an "arty" unusual font.
