File-roller actually opened a tar bar and opens zip files in seconds. Next replaced Image Viewer with Mirage...the difference is day and nite. Am testing Midori just now and once my comfort level is satisfied Chromium will be toast as well. Strange how FF and Chrome don't react the same for me on this side...they're a whole lot slower, freeze and crash all the time. Midori is very fast and now can follow tutorials with gimp open. Not sure if this is what you're looking for...just my 2 cents.

+1000 for file-roller

Xarchiver is garbage honestly. It has issues with a lot of files. I have some .lha files and it will not open them, rar files have issues, some zips. I replaced Xarchiver with file-roller a long time ago. Just forgot that I did Smile

I've used Deja Dup in the past, but currently am using Timeshift for OS snapshots and Back-In-Time for user files.

Hi,

Not sure how long you have been using Linux , Linux Lite.
But if you think back, Would you have used Timeshift/BackInTime then.??
or have you progressed into them, now being more comfortable with Linux.??
It's trying to figure out what would be best for New Users.

Dave,

I've been using Linux for many years (can't remember exactly when I started), and Solaris even before that  Big Grin.

I settled into this specific pair of applications due to the complementary functionality they provide, easy user interface, performance, reliability, etc.

I use Back-In-Time to backup my home directory (I do exclude a whole bunch of files like Trash, temp dirs, etc.) and media (pictures, music, video) and Timeshift to backup the root filesystem (/).  This allows me to control recovery of the OS independently of my data, as well as separate the storage in case I want to move/copy the backup.

Regards,
riser

File roller has just been added to LL 2.2. Xarchiver has been removed. After much testing, file-roller seems superior, handles large archives well, is no impact on performance, just as easy to use and plays nice with Thunar.

Quick question.  When you make additions like this, do you then update the beta iso file for LL2.2 with the change?  Reason I ask is because I downloaded it 1-2 days ago, but haven't had chance to test yet.  If it's changed since then, I'll just download it again before testing.

The current build of LL 2.2 (unreleased) has File Roller included so in the next release be it Final or Beta 2, File Roller will be included. This is the same for other inclusions/exclusions until the next public release. For now with the existing LL 2.2  Beta 1:

Code:
sudo apt-get remove xarchiver && sudo apt-get install file-roller -y

then:

Code:
rm -rf ~/.local/share/applications/xarchiver.desktop

to remove the Menu entry.

Thanks.  I'll make the changes manually then.

In addition to this
Code:
rm -rf ~/.local/share/applications/xarchiver.desktop

I also had to remove the file from here
Code:
rm /etc/skel/.local/share/applications/xarchiver.desktop

That is in skeleton files which are used when you create a new user. Whisker shouldn't see them but apparently it does. Smile
