Updates
#1

I've been gone a while. I tinkered around with Mint Mate and Mint XFCE, then I've had a whole bushel basket of health issues. I'm just now getting around to loading Lite 4.8 on my laptop.

My question pertains to the availability of the Mint Update that Ralph tweaked. I was unable to install it using his instructions. I sent a message to him, but haven't received any answer so checked on his status. I see where he hasn't logged on since October 2019. Therefore I have 2 questions. First, is the Mint Update he tweaked no longer available? If so, I can use the default updater if I only knew where to find it. I'm not seeing any updater in the default installation. I have Lite Updates Notify and Lite Upgrade, but I'm not seeing any updater. Yes, I know I can use Synaptic, but I would kind of like to have some sort of updater.

Any help on this will be greatly appreciated.

Have I missed something with regards to Ralph and his tweaked mint-update?

You'd have to ask him about the updater, I believe he's the only one to work on it, I never supported it. If he isn't answering there isn't much anyone else here can do. Developers can come and go without warning often leaving the community stranded like this, that's why I only hire professional developers now to work on LL. Cheers.

I'm guessing I missed something with regards to Ralph while I was away. OK. He's gone and I can't get the updater he tweaked to work. That seems to be settled.

My next question was, where is the default updater? I see Lite Updates Notify and Lite Upgrade, but I'm not seeing any updater.

Are you referring to Lite Updates??
Menu > Favorites > Install Updates
- You can also access from the Lite Welcome that is displayed at log in after a reboot (unless ticked off)

There is also Lite Software - Like Synaptic but will install common used applications

Lite Tweaks to clean up and enable/disable functionality...

Hope these point you where you need...

There is no "Install Updates" anywhere on my Menu. Nothing. Yes, I'm fully aware of how to use Synaptic. I was considering using Lite 4.x to install on a few PCs that belong to friends and family. I can not do that if there is no easy way for me to explain how to update their systems. Lite Updates Notify never worked the way it should on any of my installs.

Lite Software has no way to update and offers only a handful of packages that aren't of any value to the people I'm working with. There are thousands and thousands of packages available via Synaptic, but I'm hesitant to attempt to instruct these people on it's use. Most of the people are pretty computer illiterate. One of the "selling points" of Linux Lite is that it's simple to use for Windows users, but if there isn't a very easy way for users to update their systems, it kind of defeats the whole idea.

Lite Tweaks is OK, but pretty useless for a new Linux user, especially when they see things like Bootup Fix, Kernel Remover, and Package System Repair that they might well select for some unknown reason. Way too easy for a user to bork his system.

It's looking like I'll have to find another distro to try and use for my friends & family. The 10 key still doesn't work on my laptop and my wife's laptop is the same as mine. She is a bookkeeper and uses the 10 key regularly. If I can't get a working 10 key and an easy way to update the system, Lite isn't going to do it. I guess I'll start downloading other distros to try out. Too bad too. I really liked Lite 3.x when I had it installed and running.

Here are screenshots of my Menu showing no Update of any kind.

At clicking Menu and typing Lite - does not locate Lite Updates...

I would say along the way of attempting to install the Mint variant has removed the Lite version..

You can try via terminal but... that's terminal.

If you made a back up prior, I would revert to that...

From the looks of your posts. >>>It seems you have not tried the latest update LL 5.0
Might I suggest you try this update first before you give up on Linux Lite as a Distro. I myself have introduced it to a few of my friends and although they have not broken free from Windows yet they are considering looking into Linux Lite to just have a faster system, especially with some of their old systems. Not everyone can afford these New Windows systems they are coming out with and a lot of people look to use a computer wether it be a desktop or a laptop for longer than a year or more.

I've tried typing Lite in. There is NO update on this install. Period. I have no idea why the installation type would arbitrarily remove the Update. Doesn't seem like a natural thing to have occurred. I use XFBurn to create a Live/install DVD. This method has worked for every other distro I have attempted to install on this laptop. I have never had any problems installing anything I want on here using that method to create an install medium. This is the first time I've run into the two problems I'm currently experiencing - no update method available other then in Synaptic and the 10 key not working. These are two problems I can't just ignore or work around.

I have already downloaded three other distros that I'll be burning to DVD later this evening. I'm bound to find something more mainstream that will work on here.

EDIT:  I just read the post by ohjrson. Can you state that I won't have the same problems with ver 5.0? And can you also state that I won't experience other problems? If you can make one of those guarantees I might consider it. I'm extremely hesitant to attempt it considering there seems to be no solution to the two problems I have with ver 4.8.

Can I gaurantee either of those things? No, of course not. But there are no gaurantees with anything for that matter. This is open source, no gaurantees have ever been implied as far as I know. All I know is that for a while there I was turned off from LL as well, just from a simple stubburn issue that I had that eventually was resolved by time. UEFI coming into play on all computers. Now there is LL 5.0 that works with systems that have UEFI. I myself have installed it on 2 of my older systems and they work fine. The 10 key seems to operate ok as well. But I am only saying that because I am not sure you have the same keyboard as I do. Mine has the standard keyboard along with a set of keys that are like a calculator on the right of the board. It works fine. And there is an update. As far as burning the DVD I have good success using Unetbootin. BUt thats just me. Do what you want, but maybe consider trying it on the live CD.
