Linux Lite freezes up
#1
THe last 2 weeks i have experienced a freezing up of Linux Lite. It doesnt react at all and only option is to force a shutdown by holding the power button.
I have no idea what it is, never had this as long as i am using Linux Lite. Anhyone got an idea were to look? I tried menu/System/System Log but that wont show anyhting. Just a blank window that doesnt respond.

Hi,

What version of LL are you using (eg., 3.8, 4.0, etc.)?

Are you doing anything specific before each freeze?  For example, I'm currently having a problem with dismounting USB sticks from Thunar in 3.8.

Are you running any specific application before each freeze?  For example, I've found that running Task Manager constantly results in freezes with a mean time of about 16 hours.

If it is a laptop, use the built-in keyboard rather than any connected by USB:-
If you hold CTRL-ALT-F1 when the system freezes, does it open the virtual console, or does nothing happen?
If you hold CTRL-ALT-DEL when the system freezes, what happens?

I'm sure the other good folk here have much better suggestions than this relative newbie to Linux.  Big Grin

I am using LL 4.2
Not doing anything special, it happens at random. Last few times it was while using browser (chrome) and while using libre office calc
THe keyboard of the laptop also freezes up, absolutely notting works. Only option is to hold the power button to turn off the laptop

What sort of temperatures are you running? Are you sure it's not a clogged fan or vent? Check hardware first. Then look at software.

I did go back to an earlier timeshift backup but didn't fix it. Seems the problem exists in that too. As the freezing up happens most of the time when using Chrome i installed chromium through Lite Software and see if that fixes the problem. If not then i have a go at a complete fresh install. Got all the Data backed up on 2 separate external drives.

Most probably hdd or mem has gone bad. Hardware failure. OS freeze (windows/linux) = majority times hardware failure.
