I got trapped because I used Opera for mail for about 15 years on the Mac (and I still like it) but you can not export the emails, even though supposedly you can. And even if you do, you end up with something unusable; it's a nightmare from a compatibility standpoint.
Can you export Evolution's emails so that Thunderbird can read them?
Yes, I agree, if you're using other OSs then Tbird is best, even just to have the same interface.
Evolution is just for Linux.
Anyway, having looked up its Help, here is what it says:
"Exporting mail data
To save an email to a file in mbox format, select an email and click File ▸ Save as mbox… or right-click on the message and click Save as mbox….
The same steps apply to save a complete mail folder, but you have to mark all messages in it first.
You can select all messages in a folder by clicking Edit ▸ Select All or pressing Ctrl+A."
(there's a wikipedia entry for Mbox).
I don't know if Tbird can read Mbox format, but I opened Tbird on this LL and tried to import data: Tools>import>import everything, but it did not recognize Evolution (which is running) and stated no (email) application found.
Stick with Tbird.
