Are they really necessary?

I have gone through UBUNTU 12.04 14.04 & 16.something before ending up with this Linux Lite & as with the other variants at each update & upgrade my operating system seems to get more dysfunctional.

This computer was working beautifully for a brief period of time before I upgraded & updated from the original Linux Lite I installed from a disk + the addition of Shotwell that I was helped to install through this forum but now the dysfunctional aspects are starting to get on my tits.
Could I just reinstall the original Linux Lite  (2.04 I think it was) & stay with that,what would be the consequences?

myself I do install all updates available on LL in Install Updates, and unless someone has an issue it is what I would suggest to them.

Before installing updates you can sometimes read what each ones is for or what it does on a search engine, I done it for some in Google.

The consequences of not updating security patches would mean your computer became more vulnerable.
eg; all computers connected to the outside world are extremely vulnerable, it would increase that risk, to known and current ones.

The consequences of not installing software upgrades that are bug fixes for bugs you dont experience, or feature upgrades you dont want, would be less.

It would be best to state the dysfunctions, and the advanced users may know how to reduce that, and how to find the cause of that.

I should think you would only really need to install security updates that patch some vulnerability they discovered.

It should be considered that when a software, or component is exploited, it can be the out dated version that is at more risk.
eg; the older version was there longer, it has given more time for exploiting.

All your points make me think continual updating is necessary but why when you do this does your computer become more dysfunctional,don't they think these things through properly?
Forinstance,I find now when I go to bookmarks to access some website it sometimes requires 8/10 clicks before the menu stays in place.
Making changes to text like spelling mistakes & corrections by clicking the mouse at a certain point in a sentence or words I cannot make a brake without real difficulty & firefox is continually crashing & this has been going on for months & several 'updates/grades.' It just reverted to the original google search page as I was doing this......it is extremely annoying.

There's probably a bunch of older versions and config files that weren't cleaned up when new ones were installed.  Maybe it just needs a cleanup!  Use the Menu System Lite Tweaks software to clean it up.  Then let us know if it worked for you!

I just wrote out a long reply & ****ing firefox crashed wiping it out (& this has been going on for ages). >

Thanks for trying to help but that clean up facility did'nt produce much in the way of positive results....Like everything to do with this operating system it seemed overly complicated & constructed for the use by geeks.I used the safe option & even that presented me with decisions to make that I did'nt understand so did'nt implicate.

The problems continue (just like I mentioned previously every 'update' & 'upgrade' has made this operating system more dysfunctional & dos'nt seem to have been very well thought out).
I have experienced new problems like it would'nt shut down & I had to cut it off at the mains.The other problems persist.(I'm not sure if it will play a youtube video any better yet because I hav'nt tried it but the other problems I could well do without)......I would like to revert to the original release because that worked very well but is that now unsafe & it's security compromised?

Perhaps it's the problem in browser, not an OS?

SICKOFLINUX can you please give us all of the information on your hardware including how you have the partitions done. If different that what is said on your name, please say if you have the 64bit version or not. As for the crashing there was a thread about Firefox not supporting SSE and it was crashing and there is a fix, not the best, but there is a fix.
