[SOLVED] Dual-boot or multi-boot of Linux Lite (and others) with Windows 7
#31
Congrats -- you've finally got it working!

If you move the 30_os-prober as described and run update-grub again you'll eliminate the non-working LL entries.  Nothing should break by doing that.

When you install PCLOS, just direct it's grub to its root partition like you did with the others.  Assuming you're correct that it uses grub legacy, EasyBCD should be able to add a working menu entry for it.  If you're wrong and it uses grub2, then just boot into Mint and update grub again to add it to the Mint menu.  (Ofcourse, you'll need to have 30_os-prober back in its normal position before doing that, otherwise it won't find PCLOS.)

Well, I thought I might as well go down to the wire on this.

So I went ahead and put 30_os-prober into a saved file in /etc/grub.d, then hit sudo update-grub.

Sure enough, it re-did Mint's grub boot menu.  This now contains only Linux Mint 17.3, and its Advanced options, and the two memtests.... and the one entry for Description:  Linux Lite 2.6 which works.  So nothing broke (sigh of relief!).

The two non-working entries for LL have gone - as have the entries for Win7 and Windows Recovery.  Loss of these latter two is no problem as of course I don't need to get to them via Grub.  I still have the original Windows bootloader and Win7 is still listed as an option from the outset in EasyBCD.

So it's all good, and now tidier and simpler.  EasyBCD now has two listings, Windows 7 and Linux Mint & Lite.  On boot I get the Windows bootloader offering those two.  If I hit Win7, it boots into that.  If I hit Linux Mint & Lite, I get Mint's grub screen, now with the choice of those two options and no redundant listings.  Simples!

Now I just need to remember to put 30_os-prober back to its original place when, or before, I do any further grub updating.  I think I'll do the PCLOS install first, just to check and verify that EasyBCD can "see" and list this and boot into it directly since it uses Grub Legacy.  As I understand it, EasyBCD can apparently handle Grub Legacy separately without getting it tangled up with the Mint/Lite Grub2.

Once again, many thanks.  We have emerged into the light at the end of the tunnel!
