Synaptic Packagers Error - uses weak algorithm
#1
Newby to LinuxLite, trying to reload and update synaptic packages but getting the following messages.

W: https://ppa.launchpadcontent.net/mozilla.../InRelease: Signature by key 0AB215679C571D1C8325275B9BDB3D89CE49EC21 uses weak algorithm (rsa1024)

Any help and suggestions would be appreciated. Note, that I am 74 years old and still use fingers and toes to count, so please reply accordingly.

I've moved your topic to the updates section.

The messages are 'warning' level and are not affecting update functionality.
The warning is our system telling us that the remote software repositories mentioned use security methods which could be better.

At some point the repositories may change their security algorithms but until then we just note the messages.

Your system should be updating and upgrading ok - even with the messages.
If it is not getting updated let us know with the full details.

Thanks, it was a bit daunting.

Hi!

It is a known issue. There are more posts on that.
Since the graphic update breaks due to that, use the CLI update and it will work:

Code:
sudo apt update

In order to do that, press simultaneously Ctrl + Alt + T. This launches the Terminal window.
After that, copy the code above, then paste it into the Terminal window, then press "Enter".
You will be asked for the password you login with. Enter the password then hit Enter again.
The update will start.
Whan asked if you want to proceed with the update, hit "y" and the update will go on.

I updated everything this way, including the Mozillas (Thunderbird and FireFox).
As for the warning itself, just ignore those for now. Nobody here can do anything. It is up to the PPA server administrators (Mozilla or whatever).

This requires further investigation.
Please can you start a new thread with evidence of this breaking please ?

Would you mind posting back to say if your GUI update/upgrade are working ?
