Should I install LL 3.8 or go to LL 4.x series?
#1
I am bringing up this question as my accountant has donated some laptops (Dell Latitude E5530 64 bit i5 4 GB RAM and HD of approx 115 GB if I include the space that Win 10 Pro is currently taking up).

I am familiar with and very happy with LL 3.8 and I love "System Back" having needed to use it more than once, in fact several times!

Having read a bit about the 4.x series I am feeling that I should stick with LL 3.8 because of the lack of System Back in the 4.x series as these computers are being used for the high school youth in South Africa for academic study and research, not university or business.

My intent is to put Linux Lite on a few of these laptops as "back up" for the youth in case one of the really old laptops packs it in while I am back in Canada for 5 months.  At some future point if I required one for a youth going to University I would then reload Win 10 pro on these ones.

I'm wondering if I am missing something that may make my decision a poor choice or if it appears valid?

JanetBiggar,  I could not agree more with your evaluation of "System Back" as incredible. Since 3.8 will be supported for another two years, almost,
you can take that trip and not worry. You can always upgrade the computers afterward. I have used 4.0, 4.2, and even the new RC1, and I still love
the snappy feel of 3.8 ----but then I am not using Libre Office much, which might be a factor in the decision, I suppose, since the youth is a student.

(I never did find something better or easier than Systemback.)

Best of luck in this matter!

Systemback can still be installed and run on an Ubuntu 18.04 based system.

I've personally done this on LL 4.2, Mint 19 xfce, and Xubuntu 18.04.

Here's the link that explains how to do it:-

- At your own risk, of course. Such is life!

Hope this helps.

Still running 3.8 and lovin' it  (running 5.0 as a triple boot)

Tough call, they're both so good! You're fine with either. Stay with what you have, or try 4.0, you'll  have a great system either way. (guess that doesn't really help, does it?).

Thanks for the comments (eleme, Mart, mdeimer) it is helpful to know others opinions. I’ve decided to stay with LL 3.8 knowing that when I do switch to 4.x series sometime in the future I can load systemback (I really appreciate the info Mart; I’ve bookmarked this thread so I can easily find it in future).

;D
