Installed LinuxLite 3.0 - couple of newbie questions
#1
One of my brothers was running Windows XP on an old Dual 1800 Athlon system. He wanted to switch to a newer version of Windows (because of Microsoft dropping support) but his system was too old and ran to slow when he tried it. I've never tried Linux myself but had read that it was a good candidate for his situation. After trying different live cds, I got the Linux Lite 3.0 to install and checking it, it seems to run well.

Knowing nothing about Linux, I have a couple newbie questions. My brother has low vision. The scrollbar (like the one in Firefox) appears too narrow for him. Knowing that I used the stock settings, could someone please walk me through how to increase the scrollbar width?

Also, there is an icon for a floppy disk drive and a 2nd hard drive that shows up on the desktop. Is it possible to remove the floppy icon while leaving the one for the hard drive?

A few things:

1) For the icons on the desktop, right click and go to Desktop Settings.  Choose the Icons tab, and in the Default Icons section, check/uncheck the icons you want to appear on the desktop.  For your concern, you'll want to pay special attention to the "Removable Devices" section under Default Icons.

2) For the scroll bar, you can get some relief there by choosing a different Window Manager Theme.  Go to Menu > Settings > Window Manager and try out the different ones.  For the Daloa and Kokodi themes, the bar itself won't get thicker, but the border will, allowing for a more forgiving scroll bar experience.

For Firefox specifically, you can avoid using the scroll bar by going to your Advanced Preferences and in the Browsing section, select "Use autoscrolling" and "Use smooth scrolling."  These options allow you to scroll using the middle mouse button for scrolling in lieu of the scroll bar itself.

Thanks for answering and for the tip about the Window Manager themes.

On the icons, it looks like I could only choose not to show any removable devices and not just pick out that single one.

For Firefox, he has an older mouse without a middle button but if that's the only solution he could just pick up a new one.

If you go into the Bios of computer there should be a way to disable the floppy drive completely and that will ensure it doesn't get recognized by LL on boot, therefore no icon will appear for it on the desktop.  (This assumes ofcourse that you don't intend on using the floppy drive.)
