AbiWord Not Working?
#1
I went to install AbiWord today and it did install, but once opening the program,
it just sits there and flickers. What would cause this?

I don't know why, but it seems to be unique to Abiword.  Any alternative word processor works fine, but Abiword made my screen go bonkers until I killed it using the terminal!  Several times, even after the usual troubleshooting.  I just said "Fine. Bye Abi, nice knowin' ya" and installed LibreOffice (there are other alternatives too).

How did you install it? And or, what guide did you use if any?

You may need to use a different Abiword theme. Menu, Preferences, Customise look and feel. Choose one that eliminates the flickering.

I'm attaching a screenshot of AbiWord after opening a document in it.
The program looks fine after opening... until I open a document. Then
it goes wacky!

The gray area is where it is continuously flickering.

EDIT: Well, I guess I'm not allowed to attach a PHOTO. WHY??

Also, just read on the AbiWord website that the version available in
Linux-Lite is Not the current version. Can this be updated?

And... HOW do I change the theme?

I noticed AbiWord hasn't been updated in quite some time. Are they
still working on it or should I look for a different WP?

To change the theme:

Menu All Appearance.

The themes are listed.  Make a note of which theme you're currently using, and try some of the others.  Greybird is pretty much bug-free for most people, but there are several to choose from.  Select one, then open Abiword and open a document to see if the new theme fixed it.

Let us know how it goes!

...

Mine IS set on Greybird!

But I like Dark-Arc though it does not work well at all in this appearance choice. It works ok in Clearlooks.

I'm Done with AbiWord. I will find something else. Wordpad under wine doesn't work, either.

I think you can install just LibreOffice Write without installing all the other LO stuff.  But even if not, you need only use Write and not the other LO things anyway.  I use them all in my school work (at a school that requires only "Microsoft format" too), but most users probably only use Write anyway.  It's pretty easy on resources and easily opens all documents.

For my school stuff, I use this technique to flawlessly save all my school term papers and reports in the format my professors insist on.  If they accept pdfs it's even easier, and you don't have to do the other little tricks.
