uCareSystem Core - a small software that automates the basic system maintenance
#1
Hi everyone,

I just came across uCareSystem Core, a small software that automates the basic system maintenance.

Considering the absence of an automatic update mechanism in Linux Lite - something I get asked about on a very regular basis - I wanted to share this discovery.

Please note, I have NOT tested it yet!

Seems potentially cool, but things like this and Bleachbit are covered in Linux Lite with Lite Tweaks.  Might be better to just stick with that.

Hi Torreydale,

I usually perform my maintenance on the command line, via scripts and cron jobs. The background for my post has been more the Windows converts. One of the most regular feedback I get from people I support in their transition to Linux and with their systems is the missing auto update in Linux Lite, at least for security relevant patches.

I understand.  I have converted several people myself.  I explain how to update, and I leave the Linux Lite Welcome screen to open upon startup.  There's a big, highlighted "Install Updates - Do This First" button there.  It reinforces me telling them they need to run that every so often and to make a habit of it.

On auto updates, I thought that's what some people didn't like about Windows 10.  Forced updates.

I have installed Lite Updater manually, but since it was intended for 2.8 it works imperfectly.
It does indicate available Updates which is useful, but then I do them  with Install Updates from the menu.

Of course a more sensitive approach in form of a notifier (not an installer) would be preferable.
Lite-updater seemed to be perfect (thanks bfb for sharing your experience with it on LL 3). Or have a look at the solution LinuxMint is offering. I haven't tested the update-notifier package that could be installed via the normal repository in Linux Lite....

In regard to forced updates and Windows updates:
  •     For a normal Desktop user I consider security updates a must, no matter which OS is installed.
  •     From the feedback I get Windows users are not per se against (even forced) updates. It obviously has more to do with the much bigger hassle (compared to Linux) due to necessary reboots and waiting, waiting, waiting - and broken systems at times.

I don't see what the big deal of a notifier or updater is. I have the "Install Updates" icon on my bottom panel and check for updates once a day when I shut down for the last time for the day.  I also have an icon for "Lite Tweaks" on the panel. I do everything indicated in the safe category daily and after every update It aint that hard to remember.  ;D

Maybe for newbies, they could be a default icons on the panel when LL is first installed.  :-\

put Lubuntu on the Ace AOA150 and gave it to my son, it has a pop-up on startup to ask you to update.
changed from Windows 10 to a REAL OS
