Install LL 3.0 vs Ubuntu upgrade 14.04 to 16.04
#1
A couple of days ago, I received the DVD with LL 3.0 on it. Today Ubuntu announced the release of the first point upgrade of 16.04 (16.04.1). This is the point upgrade that allows a direct upgrade of Ubuntu 14.04 (which I have kept updated) to 16.04.

Which is actually preferable to do? Install or upgrade? FYI, nothing critical on the Ubuntu box.

Hi humdinger70,

Welcome to Linux Lite and the Community! Smile

I'd say the question is which distribution you prefer to use, Ubuntu or Linux Lite?
That will give you the answer to your original question.

I know what I would choose Smile

FYI, I wound up doing the 14.04 -> 16.04.1 upgrade. Everything still works.

Because I wanted to, I tried to replace my Ubuntu 16.04 system with Manjaro 16.06 (a rolling release distribution). My box is a 2011 vintage ThinkPad X220 with a 2nd gen Core I7 processor set. I've upgraded the RAM to 16GB and replaced the spinning metal HD with an SSD.

Anyway, Manjaro gave me nothing but headaches trying to install. Had to fix BIOS to use only legacy boot options (otherwise a startup with 'Mnajaro ' and dots) and then only a blank screen - no activity from the DVD box. If I did get past that, the install failed with an unreadable file. I didn't burn the DVD, I got it from OSDisc.com for a few dollars.

So I reloaded my machine with the Linux Lite 3.0 disc - and no issues and everything works as it should. It's XFCE instead of the Unity 7 interface, but I can live with that. Possible my box is too old for Manjaro (I'm still using the BIOS that came with the machine - 1.21 - is it worth upgrading the BIOS).

Since it's based on Ubuntu 16.04, I re-added a few PPAs I was using before (and added the Y-PPA-Manager).
