Would it be possible to make the database searchable online preferably - combining archive and live databases. Alternatively a downloadable spreadsheet which could be quizzed in Calc or similar?
Purpose to ease the path for newbies; increase confidence etc.
Also would it be viable to increase hardware categories to include scanners, printers and wifi cards. i.e. make model number etc.

The purpose would be to focus information for the new/prospective linux user who would not be conversant with all the "innards" of their pc etc. Help them in their tentative first steps. The data we have is specific to LL - being a confidence building tool before they decide to jump in. Doing what has been done before by others using their kit or similar. pc make and model number, printer/ scanner make model number etc being the most obvious/identifiable starting points for the newbie.
I would suggest that we have the LL specific info but it is not easily used/ friendly.
The next tranche of possible converts will be the Vista brigade, followed by Windows 7 users who do not have hardware sufficiently powerful to run Windows 10 ( that being forced upon them, by all reports, with the unsolicited upgrades)

Since the hardware database includes the computer's brand name, it would be more meaningful to me if the model number were also included.

I've only viewed it. I haven't added to it, so I thought it was fill in the blank by the user.

Jerry, I am not suggesting we reinvent the wheel, but restrict ourselves to making better use of what we already have on the LL user data base. i.e presenting " proof of the pudding" as it were. If "querying" the database "live" on line would be a problem, then perhaps a downloadable spreadsheet, periodically updated would be an answer. That way propsective users could make easier use of the wealth of data we already have.
I would be happy to have a stab at starting a proof of concept, as a spreadsheet, if that would be of help??
