Thanks Jerry.
I've solved the issue here by one of avoidance! I've abandoned LL4 (for now), and the problem posed by being unable to switch back & forth between the graphics drivers (with nVidia 396), and the bricking up problem (with nVidia 390) and returned to using LL3.8, as noone's come up with a fix (me neither).
It's actually a pleasure being back with LL3.8 again - I'd forgotten just how smooth and trouble-free it is, and I have another 3 years. I also love it's default icon set. Hopefully by LL5, Ubuntu will have worked out how to get the graphics card switcher to work again.

See, I don't give bad advice

I wasn't following your advice - I had gone back to LL3.8 a few days ago.
Regretfully, your tone in reply #5 was aggressive - not swearing and using a less 'dictatorial' approach would help ...
Thanks

2008 - Asus X71Q (2cores) ~ Intel [email protected] - LL4.6/Win8.1 dual-boot, LL works fine with kernel 4.15
2007 - Dell Latitude D630 (2cores) ~ Intel [email protected] - LL4.6, works well with kernel 4.4; 4.15 doesn't work
