password required to mount 2nd hard drive after initial install

Hello everyone! I just installed linuxliteos last night on my home desktop computer. The computer has a 75gb ssd drive and a traditional hard drive (storage).

The install went fine with a couple of exceptions - I am not forced to input my user password to mount my 2nd hard drive and I also has an external drive attached when installing linuxliteos.

I edited fstab and remarked out both of the other hard drives. Both now show on the desktop. The external one I can access with no problems now. But my internal secondary hard drive still demands my user password to mount/access it.

I checked permissions on my storage hard drive and all 3 say read and write.

And yet the storage drive is inaccessible to everything unless you mount it first using the password. A bit problematic when you want your music player to access your files and can't.

Am I stuck dismantling my setup and reinstalling again? It is expensive for me to do this as I use a hotspot for internet which costs a small fortune in data plan costs.

I need some EASY uncomplicated way to fix this. I do not know the command line. Just a point click edit type user here.
Typing complicated stuff is not my forte` . . .

Very strange that this OS is messed up to require that.

I have used many different versions of Linux and this one is the only one that has this problem.

My external ntfs drive - I only needed to remark that our of fstab for it to work.

But the internal storage drive is the problem.

I remarked that out too and at least it shows on the desktop. Accessing it still forces me to input my user password to mount/open/access even though file permissions are all read/write.

My home rig is an old one. Just use it for minor things. Linuxlite seems to work OK. A bit faster than mint and ubuntu.

Minor meaning playing music and light surfing and such.

I had this same problem with 3.2x, 32 bit as well.

Currently using the 3.4? 64 bit as the 32 bit maxed out cpu but not much ram. Hoping this way will utilize the 2nd core and not much more ram.

Just gets frustrating when things aren't what I am used to.

This laptop can run any of them (core i5, 8gb ram, ssd HD with second storage drive). Has mint 17.2 on it, KDE.

If I can get linux lite to work properly I will replace mint with it to hopefully get more speed. Fast =

just remembered something. When doing the install, I set mountpoint to /storage and unchecked the 'do not use this drive' setting so I can use it.

Made sure it said ntfs and did not select format as it has things on it I want to keep.

If the tutorial link does not work as a solution for this hdd, as the external hdd works well, and you had asked for an easy and uncomplicated solution.
I suggest making it an external hard drive

Would be a suitable option for easy and uncomplicated, with this uncooperative hdd, it will also make it easy to change it between your computers whenever you wish and no need to open the cases.

It is easy in Linux once you get used to it. Thunar (file browser) is a little different in regards to "not showing your mounted partition as a drive" which is what most are used to; I personally don't like the way Thunar does it but then again it is a matter of preference after all.

In Linux Lite, to mount a NTFS drive/partition, this is how I do it:

** Restore fstab to defaults (remove whatever manual options you added there)

1- Use Disks (Manage Drives and Media). Note the options I use... (you may want to replicate that)

- Mount at startup
- defaults
- Identify As /dev/sdb (matches sdb or sdb1 or sdb2)
- Mount Point /mnt/sdb  (yours may be sdb1, sdb2, or similar - select from the drop down menu)
- Filesystem auto or ntfs if you want to be explicit.



2- Reboot or manually mount the device so that you don't have to reboot. (It will mount automatically on every reboot after step #1 above). To manually mount the drive click the little triangle shown in the screenshot above after selecting the drive/partition.



3- Create a shortcut in Thunar so that you can access the mounted partition from the Side Pane. Name the shortcut anything you want



You should be able to read and write to that drive by default after mounting it, else permission changes may be needed. You should not need to enter your password after each reboot to read or write to the drive. It took me 10 minutes to write this post; it will take you 30 seconds and no Terminal input to replicate the above steps and have your drive mounted on each reboot (with read and write permissions - root:root owner). Hope that helps

What you posted is exactly what I wound up having to do. Other suggestion about the /srv did not work. Some error about filesystem.

Odd that linuxlite doesn't work like other versions of linux. But at least I got it working.

Still debating on if I want to go through all that work should I change mint to lite on this laptop.
