Add CLONING SOFTWARE to LL Live DVD/USB
#1
One thing that is needed primarily during the minutes right prior to an install.... is cloning software.  If you make it easy for people to copy their existing installation before the installer does some partition shrinking, then they are more likely to have done that backup - and be happier if something goes wrong.

Thanks !

I don't think that's a typical offering of any OS.  As such, it may be a tad out of scope.  But the Linux world does have Clonezilla as one of the more popular cloning tools that should work for a Windows user coming to Linux.  Redo is another option, though it doesn't appear to be under any current development.

Systemback is meanwhile even installed by default. It not only offers you to create restore points of your system, but also a LiveCD!

Hope that helps Smile

Systemback is awesome, but it will not clone a Windows install before installing Linux Lite.

Oops, sorry forgot about Windows Wink

For a complete hard disk backup including OS I also turn to Clonezilla running via a LiveCD.
Redo Backup looks simple, but I haven't tried it.

Have a look at this review of some open source solutions.

I had been using Redo on LL 2.8. But I just tried, for the first time, to restore from the most recent backup, on another hard drive in order to rescue some information, and it failed to boot. So I've moved back to clonezilla.

Systemback won't do full system backups in the place of clonezilla, will it?

No.  Systemback can create a LiveCD of your Linux Lite installation, not the OS you're leaving.

As I mentioned, Redo does have a more user friendly interface, but it hasn't had any current development.  Its last edition was from 2012 (as per www.redobackup.org).  Clonezilla's most recent release was 2 weeks ago.

I meant that systemback, afaics, will not do a bootable clone of the existing linux install, including all user files and settings.

If that is the case, what would be really cool would be a reboot to Clonezilla option within LL, or at the login screen, to do periodic clones easily.
