Always found ubuntu to be lacking in stability especially after updates.
For that reason, I often stuck with mint linux, but its so fat.
I tried customizing a basic ubuntu server, but still the overall configuration and stability was unacceptable.
Until Linux Lite 2.8 (my first attempt with the distro) and it was a flawless experience from the beginning to its current state.
This is a testament to work behind the project.
Really the only flaw I can see is in the theming; its too segmented.
There needs to be a tool called Themes where the whole appearance is changed in accordance to the specs of the given theme.
It should also easily allow users to create custom themes.

The most unstable O/S I have ever come across is Windows.

Thankfully now history for me.

I just wanted to throw my hat in the ring regarding additional themes etc. I believe LL should continue to stick to its original concept of a light and stable distro intended for disgruntled Windows users and those who want to revitalise their aging desktops/laptops. I've often experimented with the likes of Compiz and Compton Compositing only to be disappointed with the results e.g buggy and unstable.

LL is building a strong reputation in the Linux community of a distro that does the job well - no need to go over the top with extra bells and whistles IMHO.

I actually believe there should be a simple way of changing the theme and managing sound events. Customizing your theme and sound events in windows is an option that has been around for over 20 years not having that basic function available to be easily done by a beginning linux user makes linux look antiquated. I think the idea of not providing "bells and whistles" is one of the main reasons linux has never been able to gain much ground as a desktop operating system.  If you want to cater to windows users everything has to work and be easy to work with.

Sorry if that upsets anyone but this is how I see it.  Smile

Sometimes things mentioned on the forum are actually XFCE limitations.  Sound events is one of them.  It may be worth it to voice that concern on their forum.  I did so at this link:  http://forum.xfce.org/viewtopic.php?id=9902

Customizing the desktop in Windows?  Besides changing the wallpaper or using their Aero themes, I don't recall the doing much customization on that platform.  I certainly never adjusted the window manager or changed the icon set.  Windows, to me, isn't as forgiving in that area as Linux has been.  With slow bootups and shutdowns and malware concerns, I couldn't afford to make customization a priority with Windows.

Being able to change the "color scheme" in windows has been around since windows 1.01 which came out in the 1980's.

Sound event handling has been available in windows since windows 3.x.

Sound events in xfce are fixable, it is not an easy fix but it can be done, I personally had it working in Linux Lite 2.6 but have not taken the time to try with 2.8 yet. A gui for sound events used to exist in xfce 2, I think, but for some reason has been dropped.

As far as icon sets go you could edit icons in windows but you had to download an editor for that as far as I know.

Thx, very interesting. Specially why the sound events, are essential for me.

WHY? As Win95/98/2000/XP-User i'm used to hear the ''breathing''
of the Hardware eg. PC - and also the Software eg. OS.
