@bgaulke,
I looked at the other forum, and like rokytnji said it was turning into a "free for all",
lots of well intentioned folks, but just to many inputs. I was not aware of this when I posted.

I just did it with that file, and it extracts O.K, there is readme file inc

@rokytnji
I don't want to turn this into a replica of the other thread... So will try to make this short..
You said it worked on you system(s), is that 3.13 kernel.?

I have seen quite a few references, like this one, to this specific wifi device being a bit problematic on 14.04 based distros... may or may not encounter issues.
Also there is reference to the rt3290 being "experimental.?? with regards to Linux Kernel.

O.K, I will butt out now, and leave to the smarter folks...

Quote:Nothing stands out as wireless related to me.

Me neither.  Looks like something was left out in the kernel I guess. Or like I suggested earlier. A corrupted Linux_Lite iso download and install.

I have to wait on Jerry or Misko or Shaggy to weigh in on this because my readouts are as follows for ralink usb.

Or, you can try wirezfree recommendation

Quote:Download the file from here and follow the following steps:

Extract the rt3290sta-2.6.0.0 directory into /usr/src.
    Run sudo dkms install -m rt3290sta -v 2.6.0.0 --force.
    Reboot.

And you should be good Smile

Edit: left out of the above fix is

Code:
cd /usr/src

before running sudo dkms install command. So you are at least in the directory I would think?

at wirezfree. You can see my setup exactly which is not the same as the OP. Different ralink chip for one. Different kernel for another.

Not to worry wirezfree. I think your /usr/src link fix is the ticket I would try if I was in the OP's shoes right now. So far I see that as a best answer to this issue.

Maybe the OP has a oddball non supported ralink chip in Ubuntu and Linux Lite.
I just thought Jerry and others might have had this chip covered in their kernel vs ubuntu kernel and iso build.
Cuz you never know with custom distros.

After reading

Quote:General informations

The Linux kernel configuration item CONFIG_RT2800PCI_RT3290:

prompt: rt2800pci - Include support for rt3290 devices (EXPERIMENTAL)
    type: bool
    depends on: (none)
    defined in drivers/net/wireless/rt2x00/Kconfig
    found in Linux kernels: 3.6–3.19, 4.0–4.2, 4.3-rc+HEAD

Just wondering if installing a newer kernel is all that is needed and a reboot and then a sudo ifconfig -a.

New kernels are at

https://www.freecinema2022.gq/forums/insta...te-kernel/

Lots of kernel choices to choose from . Since support seems buiit in from 3.6 to 4.3.

But bgaulke is already running

Code:
Kernel: 3.13.0-24-generic i686

which just confuses the hell out of me since that page says "include support"

All I can figure is that the driver is loaded and that somehow the firmware was left out of the iso or again. A corrupted iso.

@rokytnji, Yes, it could be a certain combo of things, rather than it "just" being the rt3290

See if any other suggestions come along.

((I'm just about to try and fix a WiFi issue on a friend new pico pc(size of 2 packs of marlboro) with LL2.6,

I had to use Open as Administrator in order to enter my sudo password, but in the end it still doesn't work.  I should mention that when I got the installation to command to work, it came back with an error saying that rt3290 was already installed in the kernel.

Try and be as detailed in your answers as we are in our replies. It still does not work is not a detailed answer.
We are not in the room with you and do not see what you are doing.
So all just guess work on our end. Especially harder work with "did not work either".

Sorry about not being clearer.  I am just very discouraged at this point.  It's as if I hadn't done anything on this for the past week.  No wireless systems are recognized and no drivers appear to have been associated with the wifi adapter.  That is inxi -Fxx doesn't list a driver for the Ralink usb adapter.  I am planning on giving up at this point and waiting for a visit with my son early next month, who can be in the room with me and the computer.
